Tour Itinerary   Day 1: ARRIVE LEH Arrive to Airport in Leh. Transfer to hotel. Leh is in the abode of the rocky paradise wrapped in the most beautiful design of mighty Himalayas. As the altitude is over 3000m above sea level, spend rest of the day acclimatizing to the climate of Ladakh. Overnight in Leh. (Dinner) DAY 2: LEH Full day excursion. Visit Shey Palace, Thiksey Gompa palace, Hemis Monastery, and later visit Stok Palace Museum. In the evening, enjoy a panoramic view of Leh town from Shanti Stupa, built by the Japanese. Back to hotel. Rest and Overnight in Leh (Breakfast and Dinner) DAY 3 : EXCURSION TO ALCHI IN LEH (65 KMS / APPROX. 2 HOUR DRIVE) Proceed on a full day excursion to Alchi, situated on the banks of Indus River. Visit the monastery famous for its 1000 year old wall paintings. En route visit the Likir Monastery. Enjoy a photo stop at the Sangam of Indus and Zanskar rivers. Return to hotel in Leh in the evening. Rest and overnight in Leh. (Breakfast and Dinner) DAY 4: LEH TO NUBRA VALLEY (120 KMS / APPROX. 4 HOUR DRIVE) After breakfast, drive to Nubra Valley via Khardungla, one of the highest motorable road in the world. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore Deskit, Hunder villages and Camel Safari in Sand Dunes (on direct payment basis). Overnight camping in Nubra Valley (Breakfast and Dinner) DAY 5: NUBRA TO LEH (120 KMS / APPROX. 4 HOUR DRIVE) After breakfast drive back to Leh. En route visit Deskit Monastery. Tour Attractions   LEH: Leh was the capital of Ladakh, now the Leh district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Leh district, is the second largest district in the country, after Kutch, Gujarat (in terms of area). The town is dominated by the ruined Leh Palace, the former mansion of the royal family of Ladakh, built in the same style and about the same time as the Potala Palace. Leh is at an altitude of 3524m. SHEY MONASTERY OR GOMPA AND THE SHEY PALACE: These are structures located on a hillock in Shey, to the south of Leh in Ladakh. The palace, mostly in ruins now, was built first in 1655, near Shey village, by the king of Ladakh, Deldan Namgyal, also known as Lhachen Palgyigon. It was used as a summer retreat by the kings of Ladakh. The Shey Monastery was also built in 1655 on the instructions of Deldon Namgyal, in the memory of his late father, Singay Namgyal, within the palace complex. The monastery is noted for its giant copper with gilded gold statue of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha. It is said to be the second largest such statue in Ladakh. THIKSEY MONASTERY: It is the largest monastery in central Ladakh. It is situated 18 km from Leh in the Indus valley. This Tibetan Buddhist monastery is located at the top of hill. The monastery is famous for its architecture and its location. The 12 storey monastery has 10 temples, assembly hall, and residence for 120 monks and nunnery. The monastery buildings are structured in hierarchal order. The monastery is referred as ‘Mini Potala’ of India as it resembles Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Tara temple of Goddess Tara is another major attraction for the visitors. Apart from visiting monastery one can also find some rare and precious stup as, statues, thangk as, wall paintings and swords in the monastery. The monastery serves vegetarian food. STOK PALACE: Vaguely potala like and with wobbly, colourful window frames, the palace is photogenic despite a giant telecommunication tower that looms directly behind. The stylish palace cafeteria has a great open terrace. Above, several rooms on two levels form the palace museum displaying family treasures, including the queen’s ancient turquoise-and-gold yub jhur (crown) and a photo of the young king in sneakers. HEMIS MONASTERY: The Hemis monastery is situated 44 kms from Leh. Hemis is not built very far from the main village, which has a very small non-monastic population. It is the largest monastery in Ladakh. Hemis belongs to the red sect, Brokpa. Built in 1630, it is not only impressive and intriguing but also different from the other important monasteries of Ladakh. An annual festival is held for two days in June-July in the courtyard of the monastery to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava. The festival features dances and a colorful pageant where good triumphs over evil along with an annual 'bazaar' where Ladakh is from remote areas come to buy and sell wares. SHANTI STUPA: The stupa overlooks the Leh city, giving a panaoromic view of surrounding snow capped mountains. One can reach here by climbing 500 steps. The location of Shanti Stupa is such that it is visible from all over Leh city. It is built as a two level structure, one with a Dharmchakra and the other images depicting  the birth of Buddha. A white dome stupa built on a steep  hill gives a magnificent view at sunrise and sunset. It was built to promote world peace and prosperty and to commemorate the 2500 years of Buddhism. ALCHI: Alchi is a village and monastery, situated on the banks of Indus River 70 km downstream from the capital in Leh. Unlike the other gomp as in Ladakh, Alchi is situated on lowland, not on a hilltop. The village is famous for the existence of one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh (a national heritage) Alchi Monastery, mainly known for its magnificent, and well-preserved 11th- or 12th-century wall paintings, all in an Indo-Himalayan style.Alchi has several tourist home stays, most offering modern conveniences for overnight stays. LIKIR MONASTERY: The Likir Monastery or gompa is one of the oldest and well maintained monasteries in Ladakh district. The monastery is located in Likir.The monastery is known for the 75 feet statue of Buddha. Likir means the Naga encircled. The monastery got its name as it is believed two serpent spirits –Nanda and Taksako – guard it.The gompa belongs to Gelugpa sect of Buddhism which is also referred as Yellow Hat sect. The monastery was built like a fort so that it offered sanctuary to local inhabitants during war. About 120 monks reside in the monastery. Precious statues made in gold, silver and copper, besides numerous rare thangkas, murals and art works form the wealth of the monastery. Likir also controls Alchi monastery. NUBRA: Nubra is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Diskit the capital ofNubra. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyokriver is a tributary of the Indus river The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass from Leh town. DISKIT: Diskit Monastery also known as Deskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh. It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Lachung Temple and Hundur Monastery are also located nearby, the latter is below the main road near a bridge. The monastery has statue of Maitreya Buddha in the prayer hall, a huge drum and several images of fierce guardian deities. A popular festival known as Dosmoche or the "Festival of the Scapegoat" is held in the precincts of the monastery in February, which is largely attended by people from villages of the Nubra Valley.
